The Choices Are Endless…

Self-defense is not only our right; it is our duty.”-Ronald Reagan

“The essential thing is to bear always in mind that trouble can appear at any time.
Be aware.Be ready.Be alert.”-Jeff Cooper

“It is high time for society to stop worrying about the criminal, and to let the criminal start worrying about society. And by “society” I mean you.”-Jeff Cooper

Yesterday, I presented an argument that if you wanted to protect your home, you most certainly have the right to do so. I stressed the fact that before you decide to buy a firearm that you research the laws of where you live in regards to self defense. I can’t stress it any more than this: you have to make sure that you fully understand the laws of your state, town, municipality, or whatever, so if you are in a position where you have to use deadly force you are legally in the right.

With that out of the way, and you are familiar with the law, you have decided to purchase a firearm. What direction do you then go in? A pistol? Revolver? Long rifle? Shotgun? Bolt action? Semi automatic?

As a veteran of the USMC, I have a good working knowledge of many weapons and the potential that they have as to whether they can serve as an appropriate self defense weapon. Before I go any further, I am going to clarify that I am going to be talking about defending your home. Self defense if you are attacked in public is a topic for another day.

Some folks may disagree with my next statement, but I am not a believer in “shoot to wound.” Anyone that tells you that in a very stressful situation they expect you to shoot someone in the leg is just kidding themselves. If someone is breaking into your home and you feel as though your life is being threatened, go for center mass (upper chest). The object here is stopping power. You want to make sure that whatever firearm you purchase, it has enough power to stop the cretin (or cretins) from doing you harm once they enter your home.

Since I live in NYS, buying a pistol is a stretch for me. We have way too many hoops to jump through and for me personally, I like something with a little more stopping power, especially in the confines of my house. If the day ever comes where I have to use deadly force, I want to make sure that anyone that intends to do me harm are down with one shot. Now I know that a Glock could probably do that, but my comfort level isn’t as high as it is with let’s say a shotgun or rifle.

I am not going to review particular shotguns and rifles here. I would rather tell you why one would be a better choice than another. They all have positive and negative features, so my thought is go with what you know. If you don’t know, go to a pro and speak with them. They will lead you in the right direction.

So, if you are looking for a shotgun, Mossberg offers many reliable and easy to use ones that will perform well on the range and if need be, in an emergency situation. For those of you who are thinking of cost but still want a reliable firearm the Maverick 88 is an excellent choice. Just make sure that you get ammunition that has some good stopping power.

As I mentioned earlier, I was in the USMC so obviously I am intimately acquainted with the format of the AR-15. Unfortunately, because of the restrictions that NYS has put on them, it has been bastardized from its original design. With that said, even in its Frankenstein form it is still worth it if you need it.

I can’t tell you what the best option for you would be, but here are some things to look at:

  1.  What do you feel comfortable with?
  2. Do you have any experience with firearms?
  3. Does your spouse/significant other have experience with firearms?
  4. Are you considering training your children how to use firearms?
  5. What is the layout of your house? How many points of entry are there?
  6. If you have neighbors, how close are they?

Another suggestion I might give you is that when you research as to what you may want, go to a gun shop and speak to them. They are always very knowledgeable and will answer all of your questions. You may walk into a shop fully committed to buying a Glock or an AR-15 and leave with a shotgun.

The bottom line is you need to do the research, so you don’t end up with something you don’t like or is not the right fit for you or your home.

If you are a novice, sign up for a class to properly learn how to use that firearm.

I will end this post by reiterating that I am fully committed to everyone having and using the option of a firearm to defend themselves. We live in a time where we have seen that the lawless and criminally minded do not have a healthy respect for the law and will do whatever they want. That is the only reason that I need to ensure my safety and that of my family.

What do you think? What is your thinking process when you go to purchase a firearm?

Be Smart and Be Safe!!!!!

Here He Comes, Ready Or Not

“The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.”
– Samuel Adams

“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
– Benjamin Franklin

“To disarm the people…[i]s the most effectual way to enslave them.”
– George Mason

It only took about a month, but here he comes. Slow Joe is coming for our guns. Of course, you have the left saying that it won’t be so bad, he is just going to put some “common sense” measures into gun ownership that haven’t been there before. I’m sorry, but with this topic, the left doesn’t have any common sense.

What the left doesn’t realize, or refuses to understand, is that right now, more guns are on the street than people in the country. If I am law abiding gun owner and I do everything that the government tells me to already, why are you going to make my life more difficult. The Second Amendment says nothing about the number of firearms that a person can own. Since no one accurately tell us what an “assault rifle” is, maybe they should stick with sending out COVID checks. And just for the record, the “AR” in AR-15, does not mean assault rifle. I saw that on a liberal station the other day and I couldn’t help but laugh.

Making guns more difficult to purchase does not make us safer, it just tightens a governmental noose around our neck with the hopes that we will have to jump through so many hoops to buy, let’s say, a shotgun, that we will give up.

Does anyone out there honestly believe that criminals actually go to a sporting goods store, wait in line, show their ID and wait for the governments background check? If you do, you are dumber than I thought. Many states already have laws in place that help guarantee our safety. I won’t divulge the number of weapons that I have, but suffice it to say that my house will be the wrong one to pick to rob on a cold snowy night. I had background checks done in every case and of course passed.

If Slow Joe signs into law that gun manufacturers can be held responsible for gun deaths, don’t we owe it to the automobile industry to do the same? The same logic applies. The car and the gun couldn’t and didn’t act on their own, an actual human being had to be operating both of them to either get in the accident or fire the weapon. My weapons have been stored and to my surprise when they have been left alone, they have never shot anyone. I am perplexed by this.

Stricter gun laws are just more ridiculous. You turn perfectly law abiding citizens into potential criminals. If you really want to do some good, go back to the pat and frisk days where weapons were taken off the streets and out of the hands of criminals. Offer some gun safety programs for new gun owners so we don’t have incidents like those idiots who confronted the terrorists of ANTIFA and BLM and of course the morons in the NFAC who found that it was easier to shoot themselves because they had no idea how to properly use a firearm.

Now, do we have people who should not have to go through gun training (unless they want a refresher)? Yes. Law enforcement, prior military and those who can demonstrate that they know how to safely operate a firearm.

Every new gun owner has the right to own a firearm, but with that right comes the responsibility to make sure they know how to use it.

But as we well know, the left will stop at nothing because they have proven that they do not believe in the constitution. They have already started stripping folks on the right of their first amendment rights, why would they stop there?

Defending Your Home? Be Smart And Be Safe

“Most gun control arguments miss the point. If all control boils fundamentally to force, how can one resist aggression without equal force? How can a truly “free” state exist if the individual citizen is enslaved to the forceful will of individual or organized aggressors? It cannot.”
― Tiffany Madison

“Disarming law-abiding citizens will not stop unlawful citizens from obtaining one.”
― Cliff Hannold

One of the more serious discussions I have with other preppers concerns the security of your home and property. The same questions come up time and again and unfortunately it is not an easy question to answer. The main question to me is do I need to protect what is mine, and the answer to that is without a doubt yes. When it comes to my house and my family in it, I will resort to every measure that I know of to keep them safe.

So, the question then becomes, Do I need to own a gun to protect my family? Again, I answer that with an unequivocal yes. Now remember, that is a decision that I made based on my personal life experiences and where I live. I can’t make a decision for you, but hopefully I will be able to point you in a direction that will enable you to make your own informed decision.

It is imperative that if you decide that you want to own a firearm to protect your life and liberty, you should search the internet to find out what the laws are in reference to how far you can legally go to protect you and your property. Many states, including mine (NYS), have what is referred to as a Castle Doctrine. I urge everyone out there who decides that protecting their home is important to become familiar with what their individual states say.

As strange as it may sound, if after reading the law, you don’t understand something, I would consult a lawyer for clarification. I am pretty sure that “I interpreted it this way” won’t hold up in any court and you don’t want to go to prison for ridding the world of some human excrement.

For example, “New York State also has a Castle Doctrine. The doctrine states that if a persons dwelling or occupied building is being invaded or burglarized, the occupant can use deadly force without a warning shot, calling 9-1-1, or a belief that the person is armed.” That sounds pretty straightforward, yes? It does, however, come with a caveat. NYS does not have a Stand Your Ground statute meaning that if someone is on your property you can shoot first and ask questions later. You have a legal duty to retreat if you can do so safely. Now if the person or persons then follows you into your home and you are under attack, as far as I am concerned, fire at will.

Once again, it is crucial that you consult the laws of the state that you live in to save yourself from any legal issues.

Here is a nice synopsis for those of us that live in NYS (NYC is a whole other topic):

NY’s Duty to Retreat and Castle Doctrine

New York State is also governed by a “duty to retreat.” This concept does not mean surrender; but rather, before you act in self-defense you must take reasonable actions to mitigate the risk of harm, which includes fleeing and calling the police. For example, you would have a duty to retreat if someone threatened violence while you dine in a public park. The duty to retreat is essentially the opposite of a “stand your ground law,” where you are not obligated to flee the scene if threatened.

But retreat may not always be possible or required. If you are in your home, for example, there is no duty to retreat if an aggressor intrudes and threatens physical harm. This concept is guided by the “castle doctrine,” a clause that typically refers to defending yourself inside your property. It ties to the old adage that “one’s home is his or her castle,” and they should not have to abandon it amid a threat. The key difference between the castle doctrine and stand your ground, is that the former takes place in private settings, like homes or businesses.

If an intruder entered your house and you used deadly force because you believed you were in danger, the castle doctrine may be applied after-the-fact, as part of your defense in court. It is not a license to kill and – taken a step further – does not “allow” you to harm anyone. For example: luring someone into your house, shooting them, and then claiming self-defense under the castle doctrine later will not exonerate you.

Tomorrow we will talk about the type of weapon you might want to consider having in your home.

We Know What’s Coming. Let’s Not Act Like The Left Has For The Last Four Years.

The strength of our country is something that is going to be tested over the next four years. As much as people complained and cried about Trump, at least he got things done. I see in the news today that a caravan from Honduras has already formed and are making their way to the US, where Biden and Harris will undoubtedly welcome them with open arms.

Everything that the new administration wants to do has a hefty price tag on it that we the tax payer will have to deal with, probably long after Biden has left office. Where do they think that all of this money is going to come from? As the illegals flood into our country, who is going to foot the bill for them? We are. Although they will be asking for asylum, the law says that they are supposed to stop in the first country they come to. You know as well as I do that Mexico will be sending them North because they don’t want to have to deal with them.

As you can well imagine, many of them will end up here in NY where the disease of liberalism has infected the masses and Cuomo will allow them to suck off the teet of the taxpayer for as long as they want.

We will watch Biden and Harris flip flop in their attempts to appease every left leaning group. From your somewhat decent moderates to your radical psychotic wack jobs, they all want a piece of the pie and they expect to get their share. Biden will spare no expense to keep people quiet.

The worst will be the media. They have already started the transition from orange man is an evil white supremacist to Biden, the patron saint of DC. And since Harris is the first female VP, we all know that the media will all over her like Ron Jeremy on a nineteen year old. The two of them will be the toast of the town, with every magazine and website telling us how great they are and how they will save the world after four years of the bad orange man.

For those of you who value the Constitution, we are already seeing an attack on our 1st Amendment rights. Next comes the assault on the 2nd Amendment. Some of you may think I am crazy, but just watch, it’s coming.

Fortunately, half of the country will not be sucked into this very bizarre threesome between the two of them and the folks who voted for them. The left will conveniently ignore any mishap, screw up and lie that will flow off of their tongues. When confronted, they will somehow blame Trump. One thing that the left is finding out, even today, is that the internet is forever. You would think that they would know this, but it’s a choice between two things. First, they just don’t care that they lie and it can be proven, or second, they are to stupid to get it.

So, my advice to all of you out there who couldn’t imagine voting for Biden, we don’t have much of a choice but to accept him as our president. We don’t have to agree with anything he says or does, but let’s be honest, what did the left accomplish with all of the protests and hate that they spread for over four years? Absolutely nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada.

All they did was make themselves look incredibly stupid and violent. Let’s not fall into that trap.

And judging from the reaction after the Capitol riot, we know that this is what we have to look forward to for the next four years. And as it always is with politics, we can’t do anything about it except act like civil human beings. Acting like the left will accomplish nothing for you besides probably getting arrested.

If You Need A Reason To Defend The 2nd Amendment, Here It Is

“A man with a gun is a citizen. A man without a gun is a subject.”-Rep. Allen West

“A man’s rights rest in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box.”-Frederick Douglass

The following post is all the evidence you will need to want to arm yourself to be able protect yourself from a violent home intrusion. On December 9th it was reported that, “St. Tammany sheriff’s deputies are investigating a double homicide in Lacombe in which two of four of the armed intruders were killed. The homeowner’s four-year-old daughter was also struck by a bullet in the crossfire.”
According to sources, the homeowner was first pistol whipped by one of the pieces of excrement at which time the homeowner became involved in a gunfight with the four men. That is when the two dirt bags were killed.
Fortunately, the four year old girl was operated on and will make a full recovery.
But what if he hadn’t been armed? Would the situation have turned out much differently? Would the homeowner and the young girl be dead instead?
Thankfully, we still have our 2nd Amendment Rights to protect us from human garbage like this. That is why we need to continue the fight to make sure that our right to bear arms isn’t diminished or taken away. That means saying no to taxing weapons we already own and registering them with the federal government. That also means saying no to any type of gun buy-back “program.” As I have made quite clear, the ultimate goal of the left is to take our guns.
Don’t let anyone tell you any different. The left sees every gun owner as a mass shooter and those lies just play to the feelings of the left. I can not find any statistics that would warrant any type of gun restrictions so severe that would impede lawful gun owners from doing just that, owning a gun without interference from the Federal, State or Local governments.
All of this other nonsense is just a distraction and a first step to what they really want.
But please, above all else, make sure that you are aware of your states self defense laws in the event that something bad happens in your home. You don’t want to be the victim twice if you ever have to defend yourself.

Common Sense Is In No Way A Common Virtue

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”
― Jeff Cooper

“Guns are our friends because in a country without guns, I’m what’s known as “prey.” All females are.”
― Ann Coulter

“The constitution shall never be construed…to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.”
― Alexander Hamilton

Yesterday in my post I made a plea as to why it would be unconstitutional to take away the gun rights of people who are law abiding citizens. I wake up this morning and what do I see? “Biden, Harris Move against Guns Before Getting into Office, ‘It’s Past Time.’

As usual, very predictable behavior for the left. And also right on time is the immediate play on your feelings instead of trying to do something besides taking our guns. And while every atrocity committed with any type of gun is a tragedy, let’s take a look at three of the big cities in the country where gun violence is rampant.

First however, let’s venture to the where they always go when they want to threaten to take away our guns, Sandy Hook and the make believe land of feelings. Yes, it certainly was a tragedy and a useless waste of life (except for the gunman), by an individual that was as sick as this gentleman was, could have gotten a weapon in many different places. Playing on peoples feelings is intellectually dishonest and not a fair representation of lawful gun owners. Biden addressed the survivors by saying this:

“Together with you and millions of our fellow Americans of every background all across our nation, we will fight to end this scourge on our society and enact common sense reforms that are supported by a majority of Americans and that will save countless lives.”

In NY, Chicago and Los Angeles, gun violence has skyrocketed, and they have some of the toughest gun laws in the nation and the are all under democrat control. Coincidence? I don’t think so. The left has a version of “common sense” that leaves much to the imagination. IN NY, from November 2019 to November 2020, shootings have doubled! Shootings in Chicago have doubled during that same time period and they were already way above normal. And finally, in Los Angeles, the city of Angels, shootings were up by 33% and fatal shootings by 25%. Remember that Chicago has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation and is still producing record numbers of gun killings.

So, what can the democrats do to enact “common sense” gun legislation that already hasn’t been implemented in cities that they control? My first suggestion is to get rid of the democrat mayors. They have allowed gun violence to take over our cities, they let our cities burn this summer through riots and looting and they enact insane laws such as no bail for certain crimes.

The left has this very strange trying to play on the feelings of people. They can’t possibly use facts in a case like this because the facts wouldn’t support the idea that everyone who “clings” to their guns is a rabid frothing child killer. They know it isn’t true and so do we. But yet, they will push on and every chance they get they will thrust the picture of those children at Sandy Hook, or any other gun tragedy into the spotlight because, remember, feelings rule the day, not facts.

But push on they will, in an attempt to take our guns and erode our Constitutional Rights.

Now Is The Time To Fight

“The right of self-defense is the first law of nature; in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible.
Wherever standing armies are kept up, and when the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any color or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction.”-Henry St. George Tucker

“Self defense is not only our right, it is our duty.”-Ronald Reagan

We are rapidly moving into what could be a very dark period in our history. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights was put into place to protect us from people who would try and take those rights away from us. To take away rights that we have had since the start of our nation. Rights that we hold dear and were not meant to be taken away, especially from an opposing political party.

With the election of Slow Joe, one of the first things he is promising to do via executive action is to restrict our right to own weapons. Through the outright banning of some (AR’s) and making the registration of weapons mandatory, he is promising to roll back gun ownership so it is indistinguishable from what we are used to.

For some odd and deluded reason, the left somehow believes that guns kill people with reckless abandon. As I have said before, my weapons have never, ever killed anyone. For them to do so would require that someone pick them up, load them and then fire them. They can do none of those things by themselves.

As a citizen of the United States, the Constitution is what I hold as to the standard to what everyone in the country should. Unfortunately, the left has already taken it upon themselves through ANTIFA and BLM and the SJW’s to restrict our 1st Amendment rights. They will most definitely try to do the same with the 2nd Amendment.

This is something that we can not let happen. To allow the left to either take our guns or allow them to restrict the purchase of them to the point where you pretty much can’t buy them is truly unconstitutional. If the left is allowed to mandate that we register the weapons we own, then what is to stop them from then taking them? And take them they will. I have no doubt whatsoever that the end goal of the left is to have a gun less society.

What is the old saying? If guns are outlawed, then only outlaws will have guns.

I would venture to say that 99% of gun owners do so lawfully and safely. I know that if anyone from the government tries to take my weapons or tax them, it won’t be without a fight.

We can not let the left take away our rights.

So, since I am a person who looks for solutions, why we don’t we try dealing with the mental health issues and criminal backgrounds that many people who commit gun violence have. It makes no sense to restrict my ability to buy as many weapons as I want if I do not pose a danger to anyone. Leave the people alone who are law abiding citizens and have been properly trained in their use. Since I served in the Marine Corps, I would say that I have been adequately trained in the use of rifles and pistols.

Our cities have become literally become liberal cesspools for the mentally ill and they are the ones who need to be regulated, not the rest of us.

I have a feeling that this insanity is only going to get worse before it gets better and as I stated before, it won’t be without a fight.

I refuse to give up my right to protect my family and what I have. I certainly have no faith that a Biden/Harris administration will protect me either.

Now is the time to stand up and fight. One day you will wake up and it will be too late.

To Prep Or Not To Prep?

When it became apparent that the pandemic was going to reach our shores, I started doing research on prepping for disasters, natural and man made. After a couple of trips to the store at the beginning of COVID yielded no TP, paper towels or cleaning products, I didn’t necessarily hoard any of those items, but I did begin putting things aside that I might need if the first wave got really bad or we experienced a second wave.

It is now the first week of December and the second wave of COVID is looking bad. In New Mexico they are currently at 105% of capacity in ICU units in hospitals. States are experiencing record level high of positive test results as well as those getting sick. So, we are nine months into the pandemic, and it looks like the hoarding of some items has started again. Shelves that were finally full again with everyday essentials are coming up empty.

I am glad now that over the last several months I have been taking a portion of those essentials and setting them aside fully anticipating another run on these items.

One of the other things that I have invested in since my retirement has been survival food. In the event of strikes or shortages, having this survival food will prevent any issues if the country does experience either of these events.

Although I may never, ever need the survival food, I am at a position in life where being safe is much better than being sorry.

In regards to security, I won’t divulge how I am protecting my family, but needless to say, this is also not an issue at this point. Speaking of security, if you plan on using firearms as a method of defense, I would strongly recommend to you that you take some time to investigate the laws of the state, county and town you live in as to what is an acceptable amount of force if someone is breaking into your home. You certainly don’t want to end up in prison for committing the crime of defending your home. Use the 2nd Amendment to your advantage.

I know that even though where I live in New York is a suburban area, the road I live on is off the beaten path so I could potentially be a target for thieves in the event of a major food shortage or natural disaster. Not that I am inviting anyone to come for an illicit visit, but I wouldn’t suggest it!

With no real end in sight to the difficulties of the last year, I would also suggest to everyone that if you don’t purchase survival food, you buy a little extra every week and start a food bank. This will guarantee that you don’t have to rely on others for food in the even of an emergency, and with winter coming quickly, the possibility of strong and long lasting winter storms here in the Hudson Valley of New York increases with each passing day.

So, a short list of things to put aside to start prepping might include:

  1. Water
  2. Food/Survival (non perishables)
  3. Cleaning products
  4. Ammunition
  5. Sleeping bags/Extra blankets/quilts/warm clothes (this is all based on whether you rely on electricity to power your heating source)
  6. Extra Medicines-prescription and OTC

Of course, while this list is short, but I think it covers many of the immediate short term items that you might need for this time of the year.

While some folks have told me that I am a little crazy for worrying about things that may never happen, we have gone eleven days without electricity during one storm and eight days after another. This doesn’t even include the multiple storms where we didn’t have power for one to three days.

In my view, it is much better to be prepared than have something happen and have nothing!

What do you think? Is it worth the time and effort to have extra for you and your family in times of emergency?

More on prepping in later posts!

“From My Cold, Dead Hands”

This year has been a challenge for everyone in this country. From the pandemic to the election, emotions been running high and will probably not improve for some time to come. One of the major indications of this is the exponential increase in gun sales since January.

Many people decided with the lockdown that being armed was better than not being able to protect yourself. As the election neared and it looked as though Biden may win, Americans began buying guns at an unprecedented rate.

Next to the 1st Amendment, the 2nd is equally as important if not more at this point in history. With several politicians on the left calling to make “lists” of the folks who supported Trump, it only seems logical to make sure that you are ready when they come knocking at your door. Of course I am in no way condoning the use of violence, but with the rioting we have seen and the lefts inability or unwillingness to put a stop to them, it is best to be prepared.

Both Biden and Harris have said that they want to severely curtail a citizens ability to buy and own weapons. The left has shown us time and again that they will not be happy until they confiscated every weapon we own and abolish the 2nd Amendment. We have to stand up to this assault on our liberties and fight for what is right.

Owning a weapon is a very personal decision to make and no one but the owner should be making it. Not some left wing politician who is trying to score points with their base. As I noted above, people make the decision to arm themselves for a variety of reasons. It could be because they live far enough outside of society that if they called the police in the event of an emergency, they may not make it there in time to stop a crime.

On the other hand, they may live in a high crime area where a weapon for protection is needed in order to not only feel safe, but to be safe. Once again, it is a decision that the potential gun owner should ne making, not a politician.

With owning a firearm comes great responsibility. If you are prior military or law enforcement, I know that I am confident in your ability to own a firearm in a responsible manner. If you are neither, you should be taking classes on how to effectively and responsibly handle a weapon.

A good example of this is this left wing militia group NFAC. I have seen videos of their “training” and they are very lucky that they have not killed anyone. However, I do believe that this will happen in time.

So my point is this-we have to make sure that we put a stop to any attempt by the left to take away our God given right to own a weapon. If you don’t like guns, don’t own one. The left has shown their true colors over the course of the last nine months, so I am 100% behind the late, great Charlton Heston when he said, “From my cold, dead hands.”
